Plan the week.Shop once.
A simple way to plan a week of family dinners that still works on a busy Tuesday. Do it once a week, at a calm moment, and five o’clock gets a lot easier.
Get early accessWhy plan the week
Most of the stress of dinner is deciding, at five o’clock, with hungry kids in the kitchen. A plan moves that decision to a quieter time.
It also means one trip to the store instead of three, and less food going bad in the back of the fridge.
Six steps to a weekly meal plan
Look at the week first
Before any recipes, look at the calendar. Practice until six on Tuesday means a fast dinner that night. A free Sunday can take something slower.
Start with what you have
Open the fridge and the freezer. The chicken that needs using and the half bag of spinach decide the first two dinners.
Pick five dinners, not seven
Leave room for leftovers, a night out or a plan that falls through. A plan with some slack lasts the whole week.
Plan a leftovers night
Cook a bigger batch early in the week and put it on the plan again on Thursday. That is a night off, already planned.
Shop from one list
Write down only what the dinners need that you do not already have, on one list everyone can see. Whoever is near the store can pick it up.
Keep the winners
When a dinner is a hit with everyone, write it down. Next week’s plan starts with a few dinners you know will work.
How Sixish helps

It starts from your kitchen
Sixish keeps track of your pantry, fridge and freezer, and suggests dinners from what you already have.
Plan My Day
Fills breakfast, lunch and dinner for a day, with sides, and the weekly planner shows the days ahead.
One grocery list
What a dinner needs and you do not have goes on the shared list in one tap, sorted by store.
Food rules, set once
Allergies and how your family eats apply to every suggestion.
Questions, answered.
How many dinners should I plan for a week?
Five is a good start for most families. It leaves room for leftovers, a night out or a plan that falls through, and five dinners are easier to shop for than seven.
How do I plan meals around what I already have?
Look in the fridge and freezer before you choose anything, and build the first dinners around what needs using soonest. Sixish does this for you: it suggests dinners from what is in your pantry and marks anything you would need to buy.
Can the whole family see the plan?
Yes. In Sixish the meal plan, the grocery list, the pantry and your saved recipes are shared with everyone in your household.
What does Sixish cost?
It is free for everything except creating new recipes: your pantry, imports, Cook Mode and the grocery list. You get 30 recipes to start, then 10 recipes a month. Sixish Plus is $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year for unlimited recipes, and one subscription covers everyone in your household.
Can my partner and kids use it too?
Yes. The grocery list is shared with everyone in your household, and each item you check off shows who got it.
Do I need an iPhone?
Yes. Sixish is an iPhone app.
How do I get it?
Sixish is in beta on iPhone. Get early access and we will send you a TestFlight invite when a spot opens.
